The beauty of Go Ahead in the Rain, of its engagement with Tribe Called Quest’s jazz-influenced hip-hop, is how Abdurraqib discards well-trodden assumptions about what criticism is: that it must relegate the critic to a position of detached, passionless analysis, or that it must proceed in orderly, logical fashion in order to prove a point. Before he can talk about Tribe Called Quest and the Native Tongues collective, he has to talk about himself, his own involvement in the history of jazz that proceeded from that first blown horn, and how that involvement predisposed him towards an impassioned attachment to the music. ![]() “In the beginning,” he opens, “from somewhere south of anywhere I come from, lips pressed the edge of a horn, and a horn was blown.” Before he can talk about Queens he has to talk about South Carolina and the 1740 slaves codes, enacted precisely to prohibit that horn from being blown, because blown horns were a means of surreptitious resistance among African slaves. ![]() Before Hanif Abdurraqib can begin talking about the legendary Queens hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest, he has to go back - way back. ![]() ![]() ![]() I read this book at thirteen, and my world fell into place. When Jenzy died, Herb delivered her eulogy, in which he included this quote from Cervantes: "A lady is a woman who is so resolved to be respected that she can make herself so even amidst an army of soldiers". Granny failed at making Florence a "lady" in the long run, but she kept trying to her dying breath. Of course, Granny and Jenzy were my favorites in this biography. So it's guaranteed to be be offensive to many, and it was published in 1985 before political correctness was introduced. Florence King is honest about her feelings and her life, in addition to being funny as Hell. Or just leave your imagination aside, because the scenes in this book are wonderful enough without it.Ī word of warning to some readers. Just imagine Florence going to graduate school in Mississippi in 1960 and realizing that she was a lesbian. Just imagine this group of people living in Washington, D.C. Granny, determined to make a lady of Florence since she had failed so miserably with her own daughter, and Jenzy, Granny's black best friend who lived with them. A mother who smoked, drank and cussed with the best of them. A bookish British father (Herb) who made his living as a musician. This time around, it was just as funny, but I also appreciated the love and respect Florence had for her family, eccentric misfits all. ![]() I read this many years ago and loved it because of the humor. ![]() ![]() When these students’ lives collide, it’s guaranteed to be a summer Ever will never forget. I must write that I thought the novel would be a lot more fantastic than scientific. There is a high price that she pays for reaching that kind of status. On Ballybran, Killashandra works her way up the ladder and discovers that she has what it takes to become a Crystal Singer. She develops feelings for Carrik and sets on a course that will change her life forever. Killashandra meets a man named Carrik who is connected to the mysterious crystals from the planet Ballybran. She is devastated and leaves her home planet in order to heal. She gets rejected during her final exam to become a lead singer. Killashandra Ree is a world-class singer and spends most of her life preparing for a musical career. I took a chance and bought a copy of Crystal Singer. However, I read several internet articles recently about the influence McCaffrey had on the genre and each article said the Crystal Singer Trilogy were her best non-Pern books. ![]() I will admit that the dragon covers from her famed Pern Series never interested me. Every time I go to my local used bookstore here in San Antonio, I see many of the McCaffrey books in the science fiction and fantasy section. This is the scenario with Crystal Singer by Anne McCaffrey. Sometimes going down an internet rabbit’s hole can lead you to an author you had never thought to read before. ![]() ![]() ![]() A successful attorney, she's married to a wonderful man, and together they're raising a beautiful four-year-old daughter. One of the things that I love about LK (and a few others) is the inter-connection between the different novel series. I loved having the history of Jenner's connected to the Wallflowers and Craven's- and this first introduction of Cam from the Hathaway series. The story was engaging, and I finished in within a day while doing tasks around house. This story is excellent- I loved the two main characters, particularly since they are in so many of LK other stories. Excellent story with pronunciation Issues ![]() |
